Church Interior Stevoort
DESIGN ROEL VANDEBEEK
IN COLLABORATION WITH Herman Van Meer
YEAR 2003
The St. Martin's Church is a listed monument that hasbeen completely restored on both the outside and the inside under thesupervision of architect Herman van Meer from Hasselt. The nave of the churchdates from the end of the eighteenth century. In 1891 the nave was enlargedwith two aisles and a choir. I was asked to help with the interior, designingall the furniture, from the altar to the radiator cabinets. But the churchchair, a project chair for the Drisag company from Herentals, is also one of mydesigns. The new arrangement of space and furniture aims to respond to thecontemporary vision of people, faith and liturgy. Its sober design forms a nicecontrast with this historic building and all its ornaments. Old and new reinforce each other.
